Synopsis

Perfection is a gimmick.

It’s something they use to sell you shit you don’t need. The perfect home. The perfect family. The perfect marriage. Photos of that perfect life are all around us, but none of it exists.

I know better because I take those photos. It’s all a ruse to make us think that’s what we want. Behind closed doors, the house is a mess, the family is fighting, and that loving couple hates each other. I prefer a different city every week, laughing friends, and a variety of lovers.

Until Carl. I’m not sure what I want when he’s around.

Perfection is an illusion.

It’s something used to make you forget all the bad shit that happens in this world. It’s an unattainable dream not worth the effort.

I had the perfect home. The perfect family. The perfect marriage. Or so I thought. That illusion died with my wife and slammed me into reality. Aside from my daughter, business deals and making money is where my heart is now.

Until Rachael. I’m not sure what I feel when she’s around.

Cagney buzzed that the VIP had arrived. I stood up and
smoothed out my jacket and slacks. I also took a moment to make sure the girls
were still at optimum cleavage. Jimmy scoffed. “He’s married.”

I raised my eyebrows and looked at him. “So are you, but you
still look.”

He shrugged, not denying the truth, and walked to the door.
I was smoothing down the last of the wrinkles in my jacket when I heard his
deep voice. I froze.

“Jim, thank you for meeting with me again.” I heard the door
shut and heard him approach. I closed my eyes.

Carl Williamson was a man known to my family. He and my
brother had fought for the same woman. Carl lost. He never stood a chance with
his intimidating and aggressive tactics. He even used his daughter as a pawn to
get Drew to go out with him.

I didn’t know who he was when I first met him. The only
thing I needed to know was he was hot and I was in need of a hot man. At that
time, being hot and single were my only dating requirements and I wanted to
date Carl. It didn’t stop me from seeing him when I found out. A choice I later
regretted.

Jimmy kept bringing him closer. “No problem. We’re just as
excited to get started. This is the photographer you requested.”

“No. Fucking. Way.” I spun around and met Carl’s black eyes.
It only took him a second to register what was happening and his eyes widened
in surprise. “I’m not working with this asshole.” I started for the door.

“Rachael!” Jimmy grabbed my arm. He was surprisingly
stronger than I had anticipated. “What’s wrong with you?” He tried to speak
softly, but Carl heard him.

“I can’t do this.”

I couldn’t look at Carl. I already knew what he looked like.
I didn’t need to see the man standing off to the side to know his shoulders
were broad. I didn’t need to see the jet-black hair to remind me I wanted to
run my fingers through it. I already knew he was the perfect height to offset
my heels.

I could’ve bet money his designer suit fit his body
perfectly, and was pressed as though he had just stepped off the pages of a
magazine. And I didn’t need to see the look on his face to know his strong,
squared jaw was set—hard. No, I didn’t need to see him again to remind me of
all of that.

“You have to do this.” Jimmy started to drag me away from
the door.

I wrenched my arm free of his grasp and from the corner of
my eye, saw Carl take a step forward when Jimmy tried to grab me again. I
placed my hand up to stop him. “Don’t.”

Jimmy held his hands up and backed away. “Just give us five
minutes. I’m not sure what exactly went on between the two of you, but I’m only
asking for five minutes.” I hesitated and Jimmy whispered, “Just think of the
camera.”

I glanced at Carl and looked back to Jimmy. “Do I have to
work with him?”

Carl answered. “Yes, you do.”

I could tell by the look on Jimmy’s face it was true. “Then
forget it.” I turned and walked away. “I’m not working with an asshole.”

“Rachael,” Carl said my name as a command. It stopped me,
but I didn’t turn around. “We can communicate through email. I’ll send you the
list of prospects and you send me the photos, but you will answer directly to
me.”

I turned at the sound of Jimmy whispering to see Carl
silence him with the wave of his hand. “What aren’t you telling me?”

“Nothing that’s required for this job.”

Jimmy’s brows furrowed for a brief moment before he walked
to his desk, shaking his head. “I don’t know what’s going on between you two,
and I don’t want to know.”

“Nothing is going on.” I walked past Carl to Jimmy’s desk.
“What were you whispering?”

“I had set up a test.” I still wouldn’t turn to look at Carl
as he spoke. I watched Jimmy to see if Carl was being honest. “I didn’t know
you were their best photographer. The test is no longer needed.”

“Of course it’s needed.” I finally turned to address him.
“You don’t trust anyone, so I’ll take your lousy test. What is it? Stand on my
head and get an impossible shot?”

It hit me then that both Cagney and Jimmy had said he was
married. His wife had died over a year ago. I looked at the wedding ring on his
finger. Carl noticed and put his hand in his pocket as I lifted my eyes to his.
I stood there silent, just staring. I didn’t deserve an explanation, but one
would’ve been nice.

Jimmy was either unaware of the tension or chose to ignore
it. “He wanted family photos taken.”

“Jim.” He finally stopped staring at me and tried to stop
Jimmy, but it was too late. He didn’t want me to take his family photos.

I couldn’t believe it. He was still hiding me as
some mistress. I’m no one’s whore. I didn’t say a word. I just walked out.
Jimmy was calling after me, but I ignored him and kept walking. I wasn’t going
to stick around where I wasn’t wanted. Problem was I didn’t know where I was
wanted.

Author Bio

B.L. Mooney started writing when the voices and storylines in her head ran out of room. They were getting too cramped and neither B.L. nor the characters could take it anymore, so she did the only thing she could do—she made room. She always knew she wanted to write, but vowed to make time for it later. Now that she’s made time for writing, most everything else falls to the wayside. That seems to suit the characters that keep popping up in her head just fine.

B.L. lives in the Midwest, and her other talents include in-demand cookies, a very dry sense of humor, and stealth eavesdropping. Some mannerisms, attitudes, or twists come from random sentences picked up while passing by strangers. So speak up the next time you have something to gossip about. You never know, it may just end up on the pages of the next book you read.

Abigail puckered her lips and applied a light coating of peach flavored lip gloss. She cringed at the sight of her tired reflection staring back at her in the mirror. Picking up a tortoiseshell compact, she dabbed a bit of concealer on the circles under here steel-gray eyes. There was nothing worse than visitations and the constant barrage of people who came out for them.
Just as she reached the bottom step, a swift tug at her arm threw her off balance. Her left knee buckled, but the firmness of the grip refused to let her fall.
“Make sure no one goes on a sight-seeing tour tonight,” Stu growled in her ear.
“Why on earth would you care what people do?” Abigail sneered through gritted teeth while trying to pry her arm away.
“They come in the door, down the hall, look at the dead guy, tell the old crone they’re sorry, then leave. We don’t want anyone staying longer than they need to.”

EXCERPT

Jordan’s POV

I think my heart just stopped and then started again, as I take in the site of Brittan wearing boy short panties and a tight tee. A ghost of a smile creeps across my lips as her eyes land on mine.

Her mouth makes an O shape and she screams, “Holy shit, Jordon!” while trying to tug her very tiny tee down.

I kick my foot up on my knee and stretch my arms out along the bench seat as I relax against in the booth. Her all of a sudden shyness is adorable and making my dick stir to life in my jeans. I let out a low raspy laugh, “I don’t know why you’re all of a sudden all bashful. It’s not like I haven’t been up close and very personal with what’s under those adorable leopard panties of yours.”

Plopping down across from me she furrows her brows as she snatches the latte from in front of me, “Sorry I’m a little more self-conscious when I’m not drunk.”

“Well with a body like that, you should never feel self-conscious because I swear on this blueberry muffin,” I actually got a small smile out of her with that one, “You have the hottest body to ever grace this earth…and believe me I’ve seen my fair share. So you need to take my word for it.”

Breaking off a piece of her chocolate muffin she’s been nibbling on she chucks the chunk of muffin at my head and lets out the cutest little laugh, “You’re such a pig. But thanks, I guess.”“You’re welcome. Now that you’re caffeinated is it safe to ask you about last night without being kicked in the baby makers and tossed out on my ass?” I ask as I sip my latte, and prepare myself for a Brittan bitch slap.

Brittan doesn’t speak for a few moments; she just stares down at her muffin while scooping whipped cream off of her latte and licking it off her finger.

Fuck. I am trying to be Mr. Concerned but it’s really hard when she is doing shit that’s making me hard.

Now I know why guys and girls aren’t normally ‘just friends.’

COVER REVEAL

The Merry-Go-Round
by Donna Fasano
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: December 2, 2009

When Lauren divorces her husband, she has one thought on her mind…stepping off the merry-go-round. However, her life quickly turns into a three-ring circus: her hypochondriac father moves in, her ex is using her shower when she’s not home, and her perky assistant is pushing her out into the fearsome dating world. She also has to decide if the dilapidated barn and vintage merry-go-round she was awarded in the divorce settlement is a blessing or a bane. As if Lauren’s personal life isn’t chaotic enough, this slightly jaded attorney is overrun with a cast of quirky characters who can’t stay on the right side of the law. What’s a woman to do? She can allow life to spin her in circles forever. Or she can reach out and grab the brass ring.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently writing two projects at once. I’ve never done this before, and I can’t decide if I love it or hate it. I’m writing a Christmas Novella entitled Almost Perfect Christmas, the story of man who enlists the help of a woman in giving his daughter a perfect Christmas. Unbeknownst to him, his little girl has every intention of playing an angelic matchmaker. The other project is the first book of a 3-book series called Following His Heart, the story of a man who is eerily drawn to a woman, and after they fall in love, they discover what brought them together, and it just might tear them apart. Yes, the description is vague, but that’s just the way it has to be for now. I’m chuckling as I type this. Both books are contemporary romance novels and are due out this fall.

What are you reading now or what do you have in your TBR pile?
I just finished Learning to Swim by Sara Henry. I’m currently reading Love Me Tender by Mimi Barbour. On my TBR pile you’ll find A Reluctant Hero by Jackie Weger, Creatus by Carmen DeSousa, The Neighbor by Dean Koontz, Three Junes by Julia Glass, One Way or Another by Elaine Raco Chase…should I go on?

What flavor is your writing style?
I always tell people I write cotton candy for the mind. Think back to when you were a kid and you took a bite of that delectable confection. What did you do? You smiled. That’s what I’m going for in my romance novels.

Was writing always the first thing you wanted to do in life?
No, I wanted to be a teacher, but then I met and fell in love with my husband. We married and began raising a family. It wasn’t until my children started school that I started writing.

While you were writing, did you ever feel as if you were one of the characters?
I believe there’s a lot of me in my protagonists. I write about women who are strong, yet vulnerable. My main characters and my secondary characters have flaws and make mistakes (don’t we all?), but then most of them do all they can to learn, grow and become better people.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
One piece of advice I often give to writers is to READ. Don’t just read in the genre in which you write. Read everything. And then figure out what you liked and what you didn’t…and then think about why. Reading and analyzing the writing of talented people can help you perfect your own skills.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I bow down to readers! I am so appreciative that they spend their hard-earned money on my books and then take the time to read my stories. I am so blessed to have a job I love, and I wouldn’t have this job if there weren’t readers who love romance novels.

What inspired you to write your first book?
I came to writing through my love of reading. I spent many a Saturday as a kid in the local library. I loved books, but I never imagined I would ever write one. My husband gets the credit for my becoming a writer. When my children started school and I decided to find a part-time job, he looked around at the piles of romance novels in our home and said, “You’ve read a lot of those. Why don’t you try writing one?” So, you see. It’s all his fault.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
Not my latest book, but one of my titles—Where’s Stanley?—features an ending that I didn’t come up with. I handed in the completed manuscript, and my editor suggested a different ending. I wasn’t happy, but I did as she asked. Personally, I think the book suffered for it, but readers seem to enjoy it.

What books have most influenced your life most?
Old Yeller, Sounder, The Bell Jar, To Kill a Mockingbird…how can people read these books and not be influenced? There are so many titles that inspired me and moved me, molded and shaped me, there isn’t time to name them all. The characters in these wonderful books help young readers to decide what kind of individual they want to be.

Do you ever experience writer’s block?
There was a time when I’d have said no. I have a plant-your-butt-in-the-chair-and-the-words-will-come attitude. But I did suffer writer’s block while my dad was battling cancer. It’s difficult to write feel-good happily-ever-after when your beloved father is dying.

Do you write an outline before every book you write?
I do, yes. I equate an outline with a road made; how do you know where you’re going if you don’t have a map? I might write the first chapter or two on the fly, but I always take the time to plan out where I want the story to go. Now that’s not to say that the characters are going to stay on the straight and narrow. They decide to veer off the highway every now and then, and that’s when I have to do a quick reroute.

Have you ever disliked something you wrote?
I’ve never published anything that I disliked. I have started projects that haven’t seen the light of day, either because I couldn’t figure out where to take the story, or I couldn’t make the protagonist sympathetic or likable. It’s a rare occurrence, and when it happens, I just set the story aside and hope I can someday come up with a solution.

USA Today Bestselling Author Donna Fasano has written over 30 romance and women’s fiction books that have sold 4 million copies worldwide.
